Céud míle fáilte!

The above greeting is a common Gaelic salutation meaning “A hundred thousand welcomes”.  We thought this would be an appropriate way to introduce ourselves and welcome you to the possibilities of being part of the premier annual Scottish festival in New Brunswick.

The New Brunswick Highland Games Festival is a not-for-profit organization that is run completely by a dedicated group of volunteers.  July 28th to 30th, 2017 will mark the 36th anniversary of this established festival and is one of the longest running events of its kind in the Atlantic Region.

Above you will find materials that will inform you of the many facets of our Festival – we are more than just kilts and bagpipes.  We pride ourselves on being able to offer competitors and spectators an opportunity to sample and participate in a variety of Scottish and Celtic cultural activities.

Annually, we have been able to put on this well-regarded event for approximately $130,000.  This is a small budget for all we are able to accomplish year after year. Your contribution would allow us to broaden our entertainment and expand our programming with the goal of capturing a wider audience.

We would welcome the opportunity to further explore opportunities in how your organization could benefit from this partnership.  We look forward to following up with you within the next two weeks to address any of your questions.

Thank you for taking the time to consider being a part of a tradition that celebrates our province’s Scottish and Celtic cultural heritage.

Festival Weekend - July 28th to July 30th, 2017

April 2017

Dear Friends of the Games,

36 years… Our 2016 Exit Survey revealed that 55% of our attendees are repeat visitors and that overall 99% of all respondents would likely return.  We are proud that this totally volunteer committee can pull off “the best highland games in Atlantic Canada” year after year!

We count on our Friends donations to ensure that we can offer a full range of activities during our festival.  Our total budget is over $130,000, with $15,000 coming from people like you in our Friends campaign.  Being a Friend of the Games provides you with:

  • A tax deductible receipt for all donations over $20;
  • Access to the Friends Tent at the Games: refreshment and shade on those hot days!
  • Meeting other Friends and dignitaries at the Games in our Friends Tent;

Our 2017 Games will have all the crowd favourites; the Heavy Events competitions, the Atlantic Canadian competitions in Highland Dance and piping and drumming competitions with massed bands.
Of special note this year is the celebration of the Fredericton Society of Saint Andrew Pipe Band’s 90th anniversary! They will be combining some of their celebrations with us on Festival weekend.

This summer -- along with our usual local talent like Katherine Moller, Different Folk, HATband, Keith Facey, Frantically Atlantic, Oak Ash Thorn, Wicked Cry and Mark Roberts -- we are ramping things up on Friday evening with our version of “Highland Games Idol”.  If you are interested in performing, contact us by email highlandgames@nb.aibn.com. Our headline acts are still being negotiated.

We are delighted with this year’s workshop lineup, with Chris Robbins and Barb Macaulay on Speaking Gaelic; Gordon Dougherty on Bodhran; and Barb MacKinnon and Bruce Noble offering an introduction to the lore and taste of the Haggis.  Will Toner, Rod Campbell & Reginald Hayes will lead a Scottish sing-along and stories; Jacob Spencer of will host a beer-tasting and Frank Scott will host a whisky-tasting.

As with many volunteer groups, our organizing committee needs more members.  So, if you or someone you know is interested in working/volunteering on the organizing committee, please contact us by email at highlandgames@nb.aibn.com.

Thanks once again for your past support.  Our hope is we can count on your caring support for 2017.

Yours truly,

Shirley MacLean & Betsy Coleman
